I have a lovely autumnal recipe to share with you that was originally made for SideChef (which will be ready to get in your hands SOON!). But the thing is, I can’t share it just yet because the honest to god truth is that for the first time I can remember, food just pales in comparison to recent life happenings.
Two weeks ago, I set out on a late Sunday hike with Joshua that would prove to be a game changer. I mean, the whole damn game was changed FOREVER. I naively followed along as Joshua hauled our new camera and a backpack up our favorite trail (the first place we decided we wanted to move to LA together someday), believing that we really were pausing not so briefly to capture the astounding sunset on film.
We took a few goobery (and blurry) photos,
smooched for the camera, and stood together as the marvelous sun dipped below the mountains and the sky glowed a fluorescent shade of deep, dazzling red. It was so cheesy and perfect and I couldn’t be making this up if I tried.
The sunset lingered on into twilight and so did Joshua, though we had somewhere to be shortly after. In retrospect I can see his nervousness, but at the time I was fully and obliviously absorbed in the moment. I think it took me at least a full minute to grasp what had just happened when mid-hug, Joshua pulled away from me and dropped to his knee, exposing a tiny black box he’d been hiding behind my back. Immersed in a moment I’d imagined a million times, I reacted on pure impulse, immediately dropping to the ground with Joshua before finally belting out a “YES!”
I feel certain that my memory would have failed me for these moments, if not for the footage I’ve watched over again that Joshua stealthily recorded in the background (he had the camera set up on a tripod – ‘for the sunset’). It’s pretty amazing to realize that we can unlimitedly relive that moment.
I remember thinking as it happened that it felt like I was dreaming. It was surreal beyond words. I was absolutely 110% surprised and immediately began asking 10000 questions about HOW on EARTH Joshua planned everything in secret! He even picked out the ring all by himself, which could not be more ‘me’. I’m in love 🙂
We’ve spent the last two weeks in a flurry of celebration among lifelong and new friends. We got a joint surprise thanks to my dear friend Limor who put together a little sunset celebration complete with great friends, big balloons, champagne, flowers, and a to-die-for cheese spread. This girl knows me!
We celebrated into the evening as another SoCal sunset settled in front of us. I’m more grateful than ever for these friends who have become family.
Tomorrow, we embark on a new adventure across the Pacific for work and play. More adventures to come, and that promised recipe 🙂
